"Think globally, act locally"
My deepest professional goal is to bring sustainability into the common core of education. While studying Sustainable Tourism Management here at the University of Utah I've worked in public and private schools, where I have been privy to the strengths and weaknesses of the education system. What startles me is the absence of any education, at the primary and secondary levels, concerning sustainable practices and habits that we desperately need the coming generations to develop. It is my firm belief that one of the best ways to expose people to acting more consciously is through exposure to the outdoors and becoming involved locally in farmers markets, city/council meetings, volunteer cleanup projects, supporting local businesses, etc. Our school systems must emphasize the importance of becoming a "citizen" and "community member", and not just an inhabitant of the world. Exposing younger kids these concepts and reinforcing them throughout their education will be a key solution to counteracting the constant inundation of technology, media, and consumption that has pervaded our society. While those things are a natural part of being a human being, we must learn to quell our desires and remain focused on the bigger picture of humanity. It's a lot to take on, and I foresee the entirety of my career being spent working to develop and implement a common core education program that inspires and educates students on the importance of individual actions, and how we can live symbiotically with our planet and the resources we've been provided.
